First beach outing of the season – in Sperlonga
This spring has been odd.
As my younger son, whose memory is far better than mine, reminds me, this spring is apparently like the spring of 2019. All rain and grey weather until almost June. This is unusual in Rome, but this was definitely the case this spring.
That’s why I was so excited to make my first beach outing in the last days of May.
My older son was home from college for a short vacation and my younger son – miraculously – did not have a track meet, so we all departed to one of our favorite seaside resorts fairly close to Rome: Sperlonga.
As always, the day was perfect.
My oldest son hadn’t been there in years, so it was fun for him to be back to this picturesque beach town between Rome and Naples.
We always start our days with a cappuccino on the bustling main piazza, then we wander all the postcard-perfect streets to admire the architecture and the stunning sea views.
After we’ve had our fill of the town, we wander down to the star of the show – that wide beach.
It’s still early in then season. Although there were still a lot of people, it wasn’t too crowded and we were able to enjoy the sun and surf. I got my first beach reading of the season in … always a wonderful rite of spring.
Another great rite of spring is lunchtime seaside. I always look forward to that first plate of spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams). Never gets old!
Just a wonderful day. Had a great time there with my two sons, and hoping its the first beach visit of many this spring and summer.
Happy beach season to all!
Hello! Will restaurants be open in Sperlonga the first week of March? Also, will taxis be running from the Fondi Sperlonga train station to Sperlonga and vice versa? We’ll be in Rome and would love a day trip to see the views and eat some fresh seafood (any restaurant recommendations?), if anything will be open. I know it will be too cold for the beach. Thanks so much for your time and help!
As you can imagine, a lot shuts down in the winter, and reopens at Eastertime. So March should be pretty quiet, but you should still find restaurants. The bus does run on the winter schedule from the Fondi train station to the town, obviously with lower frequency, but you can look up the schedule on Sperlonga’s home page. If you hit a beautiful day (and we have many in March), you can enjoy a fabulous day on quieter beach. And the Roman museum is worth a visit, in any weather. Enjoy!
