Step back to the Middle Ages in Toulouse’s Musée de Augustins
I had a great time exploring the pretty southwestern French city of Toulouse with my family at the end of November.
I already posted about the great, outdoor Christmas market we enjoyed. I’ve also posted about the day trip we made to Albi, to see the impressive Toulouse-Lautrec Museum.
Another highlight to our visit was the city’s Musée de Augustins, one of France’s oldest museums. The collection does not count as one of France’s most impressive (although, to be fair, it’s up against some tough competition), but the stunning setting alone makes this museum worth a visit.
The Musée de Augustins is housed in the 14th century Augustinian convent, in the heart of old Toulouse.
The former convent serves as a spectacular backdrop for the art collection, which also contains impressive Romanesque works from demolished cloisters.
The nave of the church boasts works by Van Dyck, Murillo, and Rubens.
There are also works by Delacroix, Guido Reni, Ingres, Manet, Vuillard and Toulouse-Lautrec.
But more than the collection, the museum itself is worth the visit. The cloister is lovely, and we enjoyed exploring this converted Augustine convent.

Sounds wonderful. I’d love to do some museum exploration. And there is so much to devour in France! I’ve probably spent too much time in Paris museums and haven’t seen many regional collections at all. Thanks for this!
You’ll enjoy it, Catherine. Yes, I adore Paris, too, but France has so many wonderful corners to explore, and Toulouse is definitely one of them…
I visit it several times/year with French and foreign guests, but I’m never tired of it…
