Malaga’s Ancient Roman Theatre
It’s always pleasant to travel around and find traces of “my” city of Rome. This happened again on my visit to Malaga, Spain, where I visited the Ancient Roman theatre.
The Roman theatre is (dramatically) located below the Alcazaba hill and Moorish fortress.
It was originally built during the reign of Emperor Augustus, and was in constant use during the Roman Empire.
When the Moors built their Alcazaba fortress, they used much of the stone of the theatre, and even incorporated many of the Roman columns into their constructions.
After this, the theatre became buried and forgotten, only to be “rediscovered” years later, in 1951.
The Roman theatre is open daily, Tuesdays to Sundays. Admission is free.
Worth a visit when you’re next in this Andalucian coastal city.
