Traces of the past in the Roman countryside

One of the (many) things I love about Italy are the brushes with the past no matter where you go.

We came upon the remnants of this Ancient Roman aqueduct in the fields between Tivoli and Castel Madama.

Even though you see these all the time, it never fails to put me in a good mood.

It’s so impressve to see these traces of ancient engineering standing the test of time for millennia. How much of what we create today will still be around 2000 years later?

I spend a lot of time in Italy visiting ancient monuments and museums with collections of ancient art … but I still think coming across them “in nature” is one of the most satisfying aspects of this appreciation for Ancient Rome.

I’ve always appreciated how Italians live alongside their history – and these glimpses of the past with remnants of ancient aqueducts in the countryside is one excellent example.

Hope you enjoy, during your next visit to Italy, being attuned to all these glimpses into the past – often when you least expect them.
