An evening at Vienna’s Volksoper
During my last visit to Vienna, the Opera Ball had been at the opera house in previous days, and ballet performances were scheduled. Luckily, there was Strauss at the Volksoper, so I booked my tickets.
Vienna’s Volksoper opened in 1898, originally as the Emperor’s Anniversary City Theater. In 1903, the theatre shifted to operas and operettas. In 1907, the Viennese premiere of Tosca was held at the Volksoper.

Today, this is Vienna’s second opera house. I’ve seen plenty of Strauss here in the past, but I was pleased to see my visit coincided with performances of Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier, and operetta I had never seen.
It was a fabulous production, and it was wonderful to be able to enjoy Strauss’ opera during my stay. It was a full house, and I enjoyed my first Der Rosenkavalier performance. The Viennese Staatsoper is definitely my favorite, and I’ll be back there next visit, but the Volksoper will definitely be worth a future visit, too.

Such wonderful choices in this city of music.
I highly recommend booking tickets to the opera – either the Staatsoper or Volksoper – on your next trip to Vienna!
