A daytrip to Tarrytown, NY

On our visit back to New York last August, we decided to take the train north to Tarrytown, a small town along the Hudson River, to explore the town and to go see the Sleepy Hollow cemetery made famous by Native Son, author Washington Irving.

It was a fun daytrip on a hot day, and we enjoyed the breezes coming off the the Hudson.

We walked a lot…

We got of the train and walked first between the towns, going from Tarrytown to Sleepy Hollow (since Halloween is coming up next week, I’ll write more then about the atmospheric Sleepy Hollow Cemetery).

After our cemetery visit, we walked back to Tarrytown and explored that adorable town, with its shops and restaurants, and views over the Hudson River.

Here, you are only a short commute away from the city, but you can enjoy the relaxed vibes of small-town life. It’s not surprising that you have many people living here and commuting into New York for the workday, or those with second homes here to escape the chaos of the city … just a few short miles away.

It was definitely relaxing, and I imagine it would be nice to visit when the fall foliage is out in all its glory.

After a good barbeque lunch, we decided to explore some of the parkland at the edge of town, and  hiked along the lake trails.

It was pleasant, and cool, and a good way to get a sense of the area.

Along the Hudson River

The day passed quickly, and soon enough it was time to catch the train back to New York.

There are frequent trains and buses running between New York and Tarrytown. If you’re looking for  a picturesque spot along the Hudson, I suggest a trip up here to enjoy more relaxed, Hudson River life.
