Exploring seaside Salerno
Earlier this spring, my younger son had a track race in seaside Salerno.
Salerno is a small city in Italy’s Campania region, south of Naples and directly south of the beautiful Amalfi coast.
This was my first visit to Salerno, and I was really pleased to have “discovered” this pretty town.
It was pleasant – but not yet hot – weather when we were there. Really perfect for stroll along the seaside walkway, with clear views of the mountains of the Amalfi coast beginning just at the edge of town.
We enjoyed the busy shopping streets and the lively cafes, bars and restaurants.
While there, I learned Salerno hosted the world’s first medical school, the Schola Medica Salernitana, founded in the ninth century. It remained active through the early nineteenth century.
Even if it was a short visit, we really enjoyed spending time in this pleasant coastal city.
Walkable, pleasant seaside walkways, great food and well located close to the Amalfi coast and other tourist destinations like Pompei and Paestum.
Will definitely be back for another visit to beautiful Salerno.
