Wander the medieval streets of Vico del Gargano, Italy

Vico del Gargano, ItalyI’ve already posted on a fabulous holiday to the Gargano peninsula in southern Italy – in the region of Puglia.

We stayed in picturesque Vieste,  took a boat trip to the stunning Tremiti Islands, and explored all the beautiful swimming coves on the peninsula.

While there, we also visited some of the other pretty towns in the area. One of them is the sleepy little town of Vico del Gargano.

The town is dramatically perched on a rolling hill in an Umbran pine forest. From its vantage point, you can see the Adriatic sea beyond and nearby hilltops covered with olive trees.

Vico del Gargano, ItalyVico del Gargano has a long history, and impressive medieval architecture in its fairly large center.

The town is dominated by a castle, built in 1240 by Federico II.

Although there are no must- see churches or works of art, it’s fun to wander and pop into the numerous churches in town.

Vico del Gargano is divided into the old medieval neighborhoods, with their names and symbols evident on the streets.

Vico del Gargano, ItalyIt’s a pleasant town to wander and enjoy the twisting streets and medieval architecture.

We were there during the silence of the afternoon siesta on a  hot summer day, but there were plenty of restaurants and bars that would have opened later in the afternoon.

It probably makes a pleasant evening outing if you’re staying at one of the seaside towns along the Gargano coast.

We enjoyed our afternoon wandering around this picturesque corner of medieval Puglia.
