Reason #5387 to love Rome: Il Mercato Centrale

Mercato centrale, Rome, ItalyThis was a great addition to Rome’s Termini train station, in the center of Rome.

Following a similar outlet in Florence, Rome’s Mercato centrale opened less than two years ago, and it is open daily from 8:00 am to midnight. It opened in the spectacular Cappa Mazzoniana within the Termini complex – and impressive space created by the architect Angioli Mazzoni in the 1930s.

Before being converted into a 2,000 square meter “food hall”, the space was mostly closed to the public, although it had impressed me spectacularly when it was rarely opened for exhibitions or other events. I’m so happy to see the space put to such good use.

Mercato centrale, Rome, ItalyThe Termini station used to be a tough place to get decent food, but the offer here is impressive – from bread to pizza, pasta, burgers, meats, cheese, fish and lots of local wines, the Mercato centrale is a great place to stop and relax between trains, or resting your legs after long walks around the city.

The key lunch hour can get extremely crowded, but if you hit it a little earlier or later, it’s easier to find a space to sit and relax.

Special talks are held by chefs and there are wine evenings and other events on the calendar throughout the year.

So when you’re next near Rome’s termini station, stop off to enjoy good food and a great atmosphere at the Mercato centrale.
