Squeezing out those last drops of summer – on the beach in Sperlonga
I love summer. And yet, it’s the season that always seems to race by fastest.
So when my younger son asked me if we could go on a beach get-away for our last summer weekend, he didn’t exactly have to twist my arm.
I was happy to make a weekend escape to Sperlonga, one of our favorite beach haunts. Sperlonga is located on a beautiful stretch of coast, half-way between Rome and Naples.
Our first day was a bit overcast and windy. For the first time ever, I witnessed surfers catching some pretty good waves along that seaside stretch.
My son was brave enough to dive in, but I was content to breathe in that bracing sea air and to crack out my novel on that (spectacularly) empty beach. Luckily, I didn’t have to hold out for long.
Sunday was spectacular. After the wind and choppy waves of the day before, the last Sunday of summer, we were met with cloudless blue skies and blinding sun.
What a way to bid farewell to summer! I happily joined my son in diving in those blue waves. The water was perfect, and the warming sun even better. I enjoyed the beach reading and relaxing, and we enjoyed a fabulous beach lunch of tuna carpaccio and spaghetti alle vongole. I am soooo going to miss summer beach visits…
I am sorry to see summer end, but so pleased to have enjoyed that last summer weekend in always ready-for-her-close-up Sperlonga – and glad the perfect weather allowed us to squeeze out the last enjoyment of Summer 2022 season.
