An evening in Teramo, Abruzzo

I spend a lot of time in the Italian region of Abruzzo, but strangely, until this summer, I had never visited Teramo.

I’d driven by Teramo numerous times, heading off to other destinations. I always told myself that if I had time, I’d stop off – but I never did.

So, when my younger son and I headed to Teramo for one of his track races, despite it finishing fairly late and with a long drive ahead of us, we decided to take advantage of our location for a stroll around town and dinner outside in the fresh summer evening air.

While the late night driving was exhausting after a long day, I’m still glad we did. This is a very pleasant town – and I’ll look forward to more visits (or races) in the future.

Teramo is located beyond L’Aquila and between the Apennines highest peak, the Gran Sasso, and the Adriatic coast. It’s 265 meteres (about 870 feet) from sea level.

There are some remnants from its Ancient Roman past, and many from te medieval era, including the impressive Cathedral of San Berardo, built in 1158. It has a 50-metre belltower that dominates the town.

We happened to be there during a youth handball festival. They had some competitions happening over by the tracl facilities, and another court in tehn town center, beside the cathedral. We watched a few of the boys’ tournaments that coincided with our visit. Above, a photo from Hungary-Libya, where Hungary truly dominated. It was fun to watch.

We also stopped off for dinner, and my son was thrilled to eat the lamb skewers typical for this region. By evening, there was a gentle breeze – not the high mountains of Abruzzo where we typically visit, but cooler than Roman temperatures nevertheless.

A truly enjoyable time enjoying our evening in lovely Teramo. We’ll definitely be back!
