Hitting the beach in Cagliari, Sardegna
Last week, I wrote about a fantastic weekend trip to Sardegna’s capital of Cagliari – my first time there. You can see my Cagliari post here.
Cagliari is a fascinating city, with plenty to see. But if the weather is as good as it was when we were here, you’ll want to spend at least some time at the beach.
The good news is the Poetto beach is just a short trip away, and reachable by public bus.
This is a long, sandy beach, and you can find numerous points along the beach to explore.
The waves are gentle and – when we were there – the waves warm.
We had a great day lazing on the beach and reading, and breaking up the pages by diving in the waves.
More active beachgoers were taking advantage of the beach volley courts to play under the hot sun – more power to them! We cheered the on from under our cool umbrella…
You can see them here behind the Sardinian flag.
We also stopped to have lunch along the beach. Fresh mussels and spaghetti alle vongole. Delicious – and so much better in the fresh sea air, and accompanied by the sound of the waves.
And yes, had to pose my short story collection, Drink Wine and Be Beautiful, too. My stories take place in various locales across Italy, but my collection does not have a story set in Sardinia.
But one of the stories, Snake Charmers and Donkey Carts, is set in Morocco, where a hapless Manuela dreams she’s on a Sardinian beach instead of the exotic holiday her boyfriend booked (with her money) to northern Africa.
I think Manuela would approve of our weekend in Cagliari and my visit to the beach…
If you’re in Cagliari and enjoying great weather – hope you’ll take time to stop by the Poetto beach. You won’t regret it!
