Milan’s Duomo

Milan's Duomo, ItalyI’ve already written about the spectacular views from the roof of Milan’s Duomo, and why you really want to make time to climb up to the top.

However, the cathedral itself is definitely worth a visit during your time in the Lombard capital.

The Duomo is the most famous monument of the city, and its Madonnina – its golden Madonna – perched on top of the cathedral’s highest pinnacle is the symbol of the city.

Work on Milan’s Duomo began in 1386 and continued for centuries. Some say “construction work”was truly finished in 1965 – when the last of the cathedral’s giant bronze doors was completed.

The Duomo is the third largest Catholic church – after St Peter’s in Rome and the Seville cathedral.

It is built of pink-tinged Italian marble. More than 3,000 statues grace the Duomo on its facade and rooftop.

The interior can contain 25,000 parishioners, and boasts a stunning Gothic architecture, although there have been some alterations by Carlo Borromeo in the 15th century.

Don’t miss a visit to Milan’s Duomo (and its beautiful rooftop) when you’re next in Milan.

Did you see the roof, too, Evelyne? Love the views from there – especially on a clear day (not always the case in foggy Milan…)
