Time for writing reflection on the slopes

Ovindoli, AbruzzoI often manage a week-long skiing escape with my kids in February. This year, I couldn’t manage a whole week, but we did squeeze in a long weekend on the slopes near Rome.

This hasn’t been a great snow winter, and our long weekend included some wet days and lots of poor visibility… where we could barely see beyond our noses and did lots of guess-work descending the mountain. Thank goodness my kids have been skiing for years, and could handle the challenging conditions. Although that didn’t stop them whining all together about being wet and cold …

Ovindoli, AbruzzoBut on the last day, we finally enjoyed the great conditions and (almost) blue skies we often experience in February. Those are the days I don’t have to concentrate as much on the process, and can enjoy the landscape spread out before me … and that allows my mind to wander to the stories I’m working on.

I always find the mountains an inspirational place for yearlong day-dreaming – skiing in winter, hiking and mountain biking in summer and fall. Many of my story ideas have been developed on outings there – and this year’s skiing excursion was no exception.

Hope all of you writers out there have your favorite spots for writing reflection, too…

It has been a warm winter in many places this year, I think. Mountains are also a place to reflect for me. And my little corner in Maine is definitely my favorite writing spot.
