My short story, Abandoned Towers, is now online

San StefanoI’m pleased to announce that my short story, Abandoned Towers, is now available at Digital Papercut Literary Journal. If you’d like to read the story online, click here.

My story tells the story of a difficult homecoming.

Serena fled her small town in Abruzzo years ago, and has carved out a life for herself as a university professor in America. Years later, returning for the first time following the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake, Serena is forced to come to terms with decisions made long ago.

Santo Stefano di SessanioAlthough I live in Rome, I spend a lot of time in the neighboring region of Abruzzo. Abruzzo’s interior forms Italy’s mountainous spine – the Apennines.

As someone who loves skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and other outdoor activities, it’s not a surprise I love having this region in my ‘backyard’, and frequently escape the city for weekends of fresh mountain air.

The Abruzzo town in which my character grew up, Santo Stefano di Sessanio, was close to the epicenter of the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake. The symbol of this pretty medieval town was the Medici Tower, which collapsed on 6 April 2009.

I hope you’ll enjoy my story. If you want some tips for travelling in Abruzzo, take a look at my posts on visiting Ovindoli in the summer and winter.
