Reason #5375 to love Rome: Golden Gala 2014

Golden Gala, RomeI spend a lot of time at children’s track and field meets, so it’s a nice change of pace each June when the international stars of track and field – the adult variety- descend upon Rome to participate in the competitions of The Golden Gala.

I already wrote about the competition last year. This year’s event, held 5 June 2014, a clear, beautiful evening in Rome’s Olympic stadium. Many of the big names of international track and field were on hand, and there were lots of exciting performances.

Justin Gatlin, Golden GalaAfter upsetting Usain Bolt and winning the 100 meters men’s sprinting competition at last year’s Golden Gala, American sprinter Justin Gatlin came back to claim victory for the second year in a  row – running the competition in 9″91.

In his statement, he said he’d like to return to Rome next June and win the 100m again – so we’ll have to see in 2015.

Barshim, Golden GalaThe high jump was also a tense competition, with many of the top names in high jumping soaring over the bar. In the end, it was Qatari athlete Barshim who won with a height of 2.41 meters – a personal best and a height record for Italian competitions.

There was also pole vaulting, hurdles, shot put, javelin, and plenty of men’s and women’s sprinting competitions. It was great to see the stars of track and field in the Eternal City.

If your travels take you through Rome next June, be sure to pick up tickets to see next year’s Golden Gala.

Maybe you can set up tractor racing competitions and sell tickets. : ) Teasing aside, the country sounds idyllic this time of year. I bet it’s gorgeous in the late spring/early summer.
