My short story was selected for the Foreign Encounters Anthology 2012

I was pleased to learn that one of my short stories was selected for inclusion in the Foreign Encounters Anthology 2012. The publication will be released in October.

Each year, Writers Abroad selects stories for their anthology, based on a theme. This year, authors were asked to submit a short story or non-fiction piece of up to 1700 words or a poem that tied into the theme ‘foreign encounters’.

I submitted a short story entitled Missed Connections. My story follows Laura, a cautious woman who recalls a chance encounter on a train headed from Florence to Rome many years ago. This story is part of a series of short stories I am writing about Italian women and expatriate women, all set in Italy.

I am pleased that Writers Abroad selected my story for inclusion in their anthology and I will be certain to include news of the final publication when it’s launched on 24 October.

I love that the proceeds earned from this anthology goes to a worthy charity – Books Abroad. As someone who works in developing countries, I see how important donated books are to rural communities in promoting literacy and education, so I am extremely pleased to see this anthology supporting such a worthy charity.

Writers, this is an annual competition, so check out the Writers Abroad web site for news about the 2013 competition! Good luck!

hey, congratulations! That sounds really exciting! What made you choose Italy as the setting of your stories? Of course it’s romantic and timeless, but are you Italian or have you lived there or did you once lock eyes with some swarthy, handsome Italian for a moment on a train before your paths parted forever? =) Thanks for sharing your success!

Thanks, Pearson! Yes, I’ve lived in Italy for 15 years, so I find myself often placing my stories here.

Thanks, Julia. I always appreciate your critiques – but especially on my short stories. They’re always so helpful coming from someone who knows the form so well. I’m sorry we couldn’t be in the anthology together this year… but I’ll be looking out for your submission next year (it’s an annual competition).
