Athen’s spectacular Acropolis Museum

Acropolis Museum, AthensI’ve already written about visiting the Acropolis on your next visit to Greece’s capital, Athens.

Just at the foot of the ascent/decent is the spectacular, newly restored and absolutely-not-to-be-missed Acropolis Museum. The museum has been planned since the 1970s, since the earlier museum was hardly impressive enough for all the splendors it contained.

The new packaging is truly spectacular. EU funds helped construct the 130 million euro structure designed by the Swiss architect Bernad Tschumi, and completed between the years 2001-2009.

Acropolis Museum, AthensThe museum was constructed over ancient ruins, and provides glimpses to the ruins below from the main entrance.

The impressive Parthenon Gallery provides impressive views over the Parthenon and the Acropolis, and houses the remains of the Parthenon frieze (with large segments missing).

2015_November_Athensmuseum3The collection is impressive and the displays, in Greek and English, provide impressive insight into the daily life of Ancient Greece and the impressive Acropolis. Enjoy your visit to this spectacular museum on your next visit to Atnens!

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, open from 8:00 – 20:00, with extended hours on Friday. Take a look at the museum website to plan your trip.
