Frankfurt’s picturesque Römerplatz
I had been many years since I was back in Frankfurt, so when I returned last spring, I was eager to return to picturesque Römerplatz, otherwise known as Römersberg.
This is the heart of Frankfurt’s old town, and has served as the seat of municipal government since the 15th century.

In the past, I’ve been here for the wonderful Christmas Market held on this pictuersque square. It’s right along the River Main, where a pleasant river walk is now in place. Since we were staying near the train station, this made a nice walk to come and visit the old town.
And what impressive work has been undertaken to bring the old town back to its past glory. I’ll write more about this in future posts.

When I was last here – years ago – Römerplatz, which was heavily damaged in bombing during WWII, was renovated and beautiful, but the rest of the old town was most definitely a work in progress. Great to see that this has also been renovated. I’ve already written about the cathedral and its impressive belltower, well worth the climb for spectacular views, and the nextdoor Kaffeehaus Goldene Waage, where you’ll want to factor in time to enjoy coffee and sinfully delicious cakes.
We enjoyed coming out to Römerplatz in the evening to enjoy great German beer, with views, and returning the following day to admire these half-timbered medieval buildings in daylight.

Love to see cities reclaiming their spectacular medieval architecture – and rich history.
Römerplatz/Römersberg is a great place to initiate your exploration of Frankfurt’s old town on your next visit to Germany’s bustling financial capital.
