A day in lovely Bern, Switzerland

Last December, my husband and I were staying in Zurich, Swizerland, and decided to take the train for a daytrip to Switzerland’s capital, Bern. Although I’ve travelled a fair about in Switzerland, it was my first visit in its capital, and we enjoyed out day exploring picturesque Bern.

I’ve already written about the fabulous views from Bern’s Minster Tower, making the 344 steps well worth the effort! We also loved our walk to the wonderful Klee Museum.  Paul Klee (1879-1940) was born outside of Bern, Switzerland  of a German father and Swiss mother. The museum in his native Bern was opened in 2005, designed by famed Italian architect Renzo Piano.

We were blessed with blue skies and perfect weather to spend a day exploring pretty Bern.

The streets are picture-perfect, and it helped that we were wandering in the lead-up to the Christmas holidays, and so there were wonderful Christmas markets set up where you could warm up with mulled wine and chat with fellow revellers. We took full advantage of those breaks to our otherwise busy day!

The town itself was picturesque, although hard to believe it’s a national capital when cities like Zurich, Geneva and Lugano are so much larger and bustling.

Still, it’s a pleasant destination for a daytrip, with plenty to fill your itinerary.

This was an easy train trip from Zurich, and well worth the visit.

Bern is a sleepy – but attractive – national capital, and we greatly enjoyed our day wandering these postcard-perfect streets and squares.
