Admiring the Mighty Mississippi

The Mississippi River has long captured the imagination of Americans. It’s played a central role in American literature and films, and it physically divides the American east from the west.

I’ve crossed over it numerous times in my life – on long cross-country drives, but it never fails to impress.

The Mississippi flows from it source in Minnesota, a full 2,340 miles (3,770 km) until it passes through the Mississippi River Delta and into the Gulf of America/Gulf of Mexico.

Although it is the largest drainage basin in America, it is only the second longest river. That honor rests with the Missouri River. It traverses ten states (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana.)

The photos I have here are from walks across its banks in New Orleans, Louisiana and Mepmphis, Tennessee, but I’ve traversed the Mississippi at various points, and seen some gorgeous sunsets here.

On family drives, it’s always been fun to note our entry into “east” and “west” while crossing the river.

And what about you, travellers? Have you enjoyed traversing the Might Mississippi on your travels? Or do you live nearby and get the chance to admire it daily?
