My short story, Stari most, is now online at Milk Sugar Literary journal

Milk Sugar Literary JournalOne of my short  stories, Stari most, had been accepted in the online literary journal, Milk Sugar, and is now available online in the October/November 2013 issue. I always enjoy reading Milk Sugar, so I’m pleased to have my story included here.

My story title is the Bosnian word for Old Bridge, the name for the sixteenth century Ottoman bridge that was built to span the Neretva River in the town of Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The bridge was destroyed during the war in Bosnia, and rebuilt with the original stones in 2004.

Mostar, Bosnia-HerzegovinaMy story follows Victoria, a talented, young woman at the pinnacle of career success, who travels to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Although Victoria is confident in her work, her inability to commit herself emotionally causes her to flee romantic entanglements. During her travels, Victoria comes to realizations about past mistakes, and the role she’s played in distancing herself from life.

If you’re interested in Stari most, I hope you’ll read my story here.

Wow, forgot to come back and tell you, I loved the story, it seemed to pass so quickly, it made me wonder if the pages were small and I definitely wanted to know more about the couple, I couldn’t quite accept her reasons for leaving him and I am sure if the story had continued….

It was interesting too to come across the foreign words and that air of the past that still haunts those places. I have just started The Hired Man which is immersed in the same feeling.

The character’s job was intriguing as well and that contrast between what she does for a job and the environment she feels more comfortable in herself.

You spin a good yarn as they say! Bonne Continuation 🙂

Hi Claire … et merci! Thanks so much. I’m really pleased you liked the story, and that it read quickly for you. At over 9000 words (gulp!), it’s the longest short story I’ve ever written. Agreed that the Balkans is a great setting for evoking the ghosts of the past. Now I’ve taken a look at ‘The Hired Man’, and I can’t wait to read it. I hadn’t heard of it yet, so thanks for the recommendation! Your book suggestions are responsible for too many late night readings/coffee-fueled mornings. : ) Many thanks, Claire!

Thanks, Nicola! I’ve been revising so much that I’ve been AWOL over at CC. Have missed Martha, however…

Thanks, Robin! Don’t know if you write short stories, too. If you didn’t know, next week’s National Short Story Week. I’d never heard about it myself until recently. : )
