All lanes lead to Rome: Golden Gala 2019

Every year it rolls around again.

All track lanes lead to Rome for the world’s top track and field athletes who descend on the Eternal City to take part in the Golden Gala each year.

Also love this Norman-Lyles 200 m duel photo because it captures my son and me wildly cheering for them in the background. : ) Amazing race!

This is Rome’s edition of the Diamond League – the elite track and field meets that take place all around the world, and bring together the elite of sprinting, hurdling, mid-distance, throwing and jumping.

In Rome, this meet is held each year in the impressive Stadio olimpico – where track and field meets were held in the Rome Olympics of 1960.

I have been coming to this competition since 2013, soon after my younger son started competing in track and field. I come back every year because I love the competition and the atmosphere.

This year, there was plenty of young talent on display. The 200 meter men’s competition may have been one of the most exciting – with an impressive line-up and photo finish end with Michael Norman edging out Noah Lyles.

The women’s 100 m, men’s 110 meter hurdles, women’s pole vault and men’s high jump were also exciting competitions.

If your Roman travels take you through the Eternal City at the start of June, check out the dates, because it might be worth looking into tickets for this impressive event.
