Hangin’ out with the iguanas … in Guayaquil, Ecuador

Guayaquil, EcuadorLast week, I was in the coastal city of Guayaquil, Ecuador. It was my first time there, and though work didn’t allow me as much time as I would have liked to explore, I did get a nice introduction to Ecuador’s largest city.

I also had the chance to make “friends” with some of the locals. In this case, locals who hung each day out at the park just across from my hotel.

Those of you who know Guayaquil may have guessed – I was staying right near Iguana Park – the actual name is Parque Seminario.

I used to stop off here early in the day cooling down after a jog, and the iguanas were often sleeping in the trees or hiding out.

Guayaquil, Ecuador In the noonday sun, they were out in force, lounging in the sun (smart creatures!), hanging out with the tourists and munching on all the lettuce made available to them by park workers.

The twentieth century San Pedro cathedral, built on the site of a former 17th century cathedral that was originally built in wood, sits picturesquely on one edge of the park.

The park is close to plenty of other tourist sites in the Ecuadoran city, so it’s well worth a visit the next time you’re in town.

I’m back in Rome now and already missing all my iguana friends…

Wow! Quite impressive. I saw some massive iguanas in parts of Florida, too. Must be relatives 🙂
