The biggest log building in the world : The Old Faithful Inn

The Old Faithful Inn, Yellowstone National ParkThe Old Faithful Inn, the iconic lodge of Yellowstone National Park, was built in 1903-1904 (started in the winter, if you can imagine) and today is a national historic landmark. It is located just across the Old Faithful geyser.

The structure was built entirely with local logs and stones, and it is considered the largest log structure in the world. When it opened in 1904, it was unusual for a park lodge to have electric light and steam heat.

The Old Faithful Inn, Yellowstone National ParkIts most impressive feature is its four-story lobby which stands at 76 feet (approximately 23 meters) tall, with its impressive stone fireplace at its center and its original clock made of copper, wood and iron.

Yellowstone Park has a large number of rooms available in its inns, lodges and camping sites, but the Old Faithful Inn is by far the most requested accommodation, and must be booked a year in advance.

The Old Faithful Inn, Yellowstone National ParkEven if you don’t manage to stay there, you can book in their dining room, where we ate one night. It’s a great environment.

We also loved sitting down to relax in the lobby and on the wide front porch – what a fabulous, rustic atmosphere.

The Old Faithful Inn is a must-see on your visit to Yellowstone National Park, whether you’re staying there or just stopping by.
