The winding streets of Nice’s old town

Nice, FranceThe French Riviera city of Nice is a beautiful place to visit. I especially loved wandering Vieux Nice, where I could be forgiven for thinking I was back in Italy.

The old quarter used to have  a reputation for being dangerous, but today it’s a beautiful area to wander and enjoy the views into the past. I’ve already written about Place Saleya and its impressive outdoor market.

Nice, FranceIn an earlier post, I’ve also written about the Cafe de Turin, at the edge of thee old town and a great place to enjoy seafood platters.

The streets in the old town are too narrow for cars and buses, so it’s a great place for relatively car-free wandering.

The homes are colorful and reminiscent of the towns of neighboring Liguria, across the Italian border. Like Italy, there are also lines of drying laundry hanging from the windows … it felt like back home.

A warming diner of socca and red wine on the streets of Vieux Nice

We were out wandering on a cool night in December, and we stopped in a little restaurant with outdoor tables to warm up with a local specialty, freshly baked socca (a tasty pancake made of chickpea flower) and red wine.

Don’t miss out on these beautiful steets of Vieux Nice on your next visit to this pretty Riviera city.
