Admiring dramatic sunsets in Athens

Sunset, Athens, GreeceI went to Athens with my family this past December, and we lucked out with sunny skies and balmy temperatures – I even returned to Rome slight suntanned. : )

Athens is a great city to explore, and the Acropolis is perched at a dramatic high point where it can be enjoyed across the entire city – especially at the dramatic hour of sunset.

Sunset, Athens, GreeceOne perfect evening, we decided to watch the setting sun from the rocky perch of the neighboring park.

Our observation point boasted an impressive view of the Acropolis, and we loved to see the ancient monument bathed in a stunning golden light before the sun slipped down beyond the horizon. The Mediterranean Sea was visible just beyond.

Sunset, Athens, GreeceIt was a memorable way to admire the Acropolis on our first day in Athens.

Later that night, we would walk around the monument, and enjoy its dramatic floodlighting, but I highly recommend our dramatic perch to enjoy a sunset early on during your next stay in Athens.

For more Athens tips, see my earlier posts on a room with a view and my suggestions for a visit to Athens’ Cycladic Museum.

Enjoy your stay in this interesting city the next time you’re passing through Greece.

Lovely shots, though how difficult life in Athens must be right now. The Cycladic sculptures are so mesmerising!

Yes, it is a beautiful place. I loved the Cycladic sculptures, too, and immediately saw how obvious it was that Picasso and Modigliani were also big fans. : )
