Happy National Short Story Week 2013!

Short Story Week 2013This is a good year for the short story.

Canadian short story writer Alice Munro won the (well-deserved) Nobel Prize for Literature last month. Plenty of online journals and e-readers provide possibilities for short story writers to get their stories out there to a reading public.

In the words of the talented author, Lorrie Moore: “A short story is a love affair, a novel is a marriage.”

So, short story writers and readers, there are plenty of reason to embrace the love affair and think of the short story this week, because 11-17 November 2013 marks the annual celebration of National Short Story Week.

Take a look at the site to read short stories, listen to them, read interviews authors of short stories, and learn about youth short story competitions.

And, better yet, dedicate this week (and beyond) to writing your own short stories and to reading all the wonderful work already out there.

Happy National Short Story Week 2013 to everyone!

Happy Short Story Week to you too! It’s my favourite form – perhaps that’s why I like love affairs more than marriage. Hah! Am I allowed to say that? See you soon in Roma.

Haha! Well, you certainly *can* say it, particularly if you’re speaking as the author of ‘The Divorced Lady’s Companion to Living in Italy’. : ) Maybe Lorrie Moore’s husband took issue with her statement, too.
