I finally joined the Twitter bandwagon

TwitterIt took me  a while, but I’ve finally joined over 200 million users of Twitter.

I’ve been using Twitter for my work, and find it quite useful for reaching specialized audiences. Unlike Facebook – which I hate, loathe, despise, makes me break out in hives – I find Twitter to be a great way to keep updated.

I’ve attended writing conferences and read writing magazines where all the experts stress the need for a Twitter presence, and yet I’ve held out until now.

I guess my main concern centers on taking time away what is my already very limited writing time. I’ve already posted on whether keeping up with social media takes time away from your writing.

When I wrote that post, I only had a blog presence. Since then, I’ve also joined Goodreads, which I love, and now Twitter. I do worry about maintaining focus (or giving up even more sleep), but I also like the idea of keeping up with writer friends and industry news.

TwitterSo, I look forward to being active on Twitter and STILL carving out enough time to write my short stories and novels.

If you’re on Twitter, find me @KimberlyinRome. I’ll look forward to being in touch!

And for all you other writers and bloggers out there, what have your experiences with Twitter been? Love it? Hate it? Given up sleep to Tweet?

I’ll be following you! It’s true social media DOES erode valuable writing time and it is important to keep repeating that on air. I’m guilty of it! Unlike you I use Facebook to send out news of my blog posts and find I get a good response. I’ve been on Twitter for ages but hardly ever use it at all, I find it irritating! I’ll try and learn some tips from you. I’m @catinitaly

Thanks, Kimberly. I am considering the possibility of joining twitter. I HATE facebook, too.

Ooh, great, Julia. Let me know when you make the plunge, so I can follow you. Ha! Two thumbs down to Facebook from us then. : )

Good luck on Twitter, Kimberly. It’s on my list of things to do in April actually so I’ll let you know when I’m “on”.

Good to hear, Grace. Let me know when you join. Sounds like you have a very good and disciplined plan for staying focused. Might borrow from your playbook! : )

I’m much better at interacting with people through Facebook. The brevity of twitter is tough for me. I’m struggling to learn how to manage my time still. Sometimes, I don’t give twitter the attention it deserves. Happy to see you over there, though! There are a lot of fun things you can find too!

Well, Chantel, since I’ve been following you, it seems to me that you’ve managed to get it down to a science. You’re right – there are lots of resources out there. I’ve never had much of a ‘groupie’ mentality, but getting a response to a Tweet from one of the authors I admire did make my heart do a little pitter patter. : )

Well done! From now on you’ll have a stronger connection with your readers.
Unfortunately Twitter or Facebook are not my cup of tea because I feel intimidated to share too much about my life..

That’s a valid point, Celeste. Even if I’m on Twitter now, I agree that preserving privacy is an issue with social networking. I think that’s one of my biggest concerns with Facebook. But at least we’re in touch through your blog! Happy writing!
