The Intrepid – Visit New York’s aircraft carrier
New York City is home when we’re back in the States, and there’s certainly never a shortage of things to do. One a recent trip back to New York, we made a visit to the USS Intrepid, an aircraft carrier-museum docked permanently in New York’s Hudson River.
The USS Intrepid had a long career spanning three decades – from 1943 to 1974, serving in the Pacific during World War II and in Vietnam. It also served as a recovery ship for two space missions.
At the controls
The USS Intrepid was decommissioned in 1972, and since 1982 it has served as a museum ship in New York City, docked at Pier 86.
The Hangar Deck contains exhibitions about the Intrepid’s long history, including background about where Japanese kamikaze pilots hit the aircraft during World War II. The Berthing Areas show how sailors lived on aircraft carriers when out at sea on this floating city.
The flight deck displays nearly two dozen aircraft and you can get an up-close look at them.
On the flight deck
Be sure to visit the Intrepid on a clear day, because the views of New York’s skyline from the flight deck are stunning. It’s not surprising that many receptions and events are hosted from this spot.
